Willie Mullins Set For Major Aintree Assault
The Grand National Festival at Aintree often lacks top class Irish runners as it falls in between Cheltenham and Punchestown but this year will be completely different as the Liverpool venue gets ready for a green invasion. The all-powerful Willie Mullins yard have made their intentions clear with a whole host of entries for the meeting as he bids to take the British Trainers Championship for the first time.
Mullins has of course dominated the National hunt scene over the past couple of years and that continued recently as he swept the board at the Cheltenham Festival with a series of stunning wins. That success has clearly given Mullins the thought that this is his best chance to claim the British title with Paul Nicholls firmly in his sights, especially if he can have a good three days at Aintree.
Mullins has a plethora of entries for Aintree including Shaneshill and Douvan for the Manifesto Novices Chase, Let's Dance, Apples Jade and Footpad for the Anniversary 4YO Juvenile Hurdle, Don Poli and Djakadam for the Betfred Bowl, Annie Power and Nichols Canyon for the Aintree Hurdle and Vroum Vroum Mag who could run in any number of races at this stage.
We should also mention Limini, Bellshill, Yorkhill, Un De Sceaux, Vautour, Gangster, Felix Yonger and Augusta Kate who are all set to run with great chances on Merseyside, whilst Mullins will also have a couple of each-way chances in the Grand National itself with On His Own and Boston Bob more than capable of running well in the big one this Saturday.
All the signs suggest that Mullins will dominate the Aintree Festival like never before and given the amount of Grade 1 races and prize money on offer, we can expect the Irish handler to be in pole position to pick up the British Trainers Championship at the end of the weekend.
