The age of the Grand National winner is a key factor when studying the trends to try and identify the potential winner of the race. Younger horses tend to struggle in the race with the last horse aged under 8 to win the race coming back in 1980 and only two 13 year olds winning in the race's 120 year history. However, if finding the winner seems a daunting task and you'd prefer to have several horses running for you in the race then betting on the age of the winning horse is a good market to bet on.
For example, four of the last ten Grand National winners have been aged nine and if you were to back a 9 year old to win the race in 2011, you'd have nine of the forty runners running for you.
KEY TREND: Over the past 25 years, the average age of the Grand National winner has been 10 years old.
