Vic Venturi New Grand National Favourite after Becher Win

There is a new favourite for the 2010 Grand National after Vic Venturi won the Becher Chase at the weekend to prove his ability. He was well supported for the Becher Chase which is considered the premiere Grand National Trial and he won in style despite the awful conditions at Aintree. Vic Venturi is trained by Dessie Hughes who also had the winner in the 2008 Becher chase with Black Apalachi so he clearly knows what it takes to win over the National fences.

Boylesports reacted to the win by slashing the odds of Vic Venturi right the way into 16/1 favouritism in the ante-post betting for the Grand National 2010. Vic Venturi ran really well in the Becher Chase despite Scottish National winner Hello Bud making the running for the most part, jockey Paddy Flood held him back until the run in when he clearly had the most in the tank to win by 5 lengths. He jumped well all the way and looked in good shape in terms of the trip despite the terrible rain and soft ground which will be an encouragement for his National backers, one thing against him was the small field of just 8 which meant that the quality was questionable.

Dessie Hughes looks like launching a twin assault on the 2010 Grand National with Vic Venturi likely to head to Aintree along with 2008 Becher Chase winner, Black Apalachi who ran well in the 2009 National. Black Apalachi was leading at Aintree in April before falling at Bechers on the second circuit when travelling well and may well have another crack in 2010. We are waiting to see his first run of the season before making our preferance between the two Dessie hughes runners but either way he could be the trainer to watch at Aintree come April.
