Mon Mome Pulled Up on First Run Since Grand National Win

Mon Mome made his first appearance since winning the 2009 Grand National as a 100/1 outsider at Newbury this weekend in the high class Hennessy Gold Cup. All ante-post National punters were watching Mon Mome closely but he did not produce and was pulled up by jockey Aiden Coleman after never getting involved with the race. He was unable to live with the searing pace set by the classy field which was led by Denman who stormed away to win the race in stunning fashion.

To be fair to the National winner, he was carrying an extra 13lbs for that win at Aintree and was completely out of his depth in this company which will be a worry for his supporters. He will now surely be aimed at lower quality fields if he is to get back on track ahead of another tilt in the 2010 Grand National. The bookies are not to worried by the performance and he remains pretty steady in the market for the National, he can still be backed at 33/1 with Paddy Power which most definitely offers some excellent each/way value at this stage. No matter how he runs between now and April he will no doubt be a lot shorter than the 100/1 that he went off at in his National win.

There were plenty of other potential Grand National runners who took their place in the Hennessy with varying degrees of success. My Will who came third in the 2009 National came in a good 7th place despite never really being in the mix-up, he should come on for that run and is still being aimed for another crack around Aintree. Niche Market was the winner of the Irish National in April ran a superb race to finish third and enhance his reputation, he only came behind Denman and What a Friend and looks in great shape for a crack at the National which is reflected in the ante-post betting
