With the Aintree Grand National begining to hit the racing agenda it has emerged that a new possible runner in Forget the Past may take his chance in the big race next april.
The Cheltenham Gold Cup placed Forget The Past will be aimed at the John Smiths Grand National provided the gelding stays free from injury. The Michael O’Brien-trained eight-year-old finished a gallant third behind War Of Attrition in last season’s renewal of the Gold Cup having previously landed both the Red Mills Chase and the Bobbyjo Chase in his native Ireland.
A tilt at the Grand National has been revealed but the trainer has warned his charge will need to prove he is totally fit before taking on the Aintree course. "He has been having treatment on a back problem," said O'Brien.
"Two of his vertebrae have been rubbing together. We think it could have happened early in the year during a schooling mishap on the Curragh. "If the treatment works he will reappear at Leopardstown over Christmas and he will then be trained with the Grand National in mind.
"If he isn't right then we will give the rest of this season a miss." Having been matched in three figures, Forget The Past currently trades at 36 for the Aintree showpiece in a market dominated by Irish-trained runners.
