The 2009 Grand National would go down in history as one the winner was one of the greatest shocks in the history of the race. The race started with My Will for Paul Nicholls the well backed favourite but the race did not quite work out for the pre race favourite, it would be a day that punters would not forget as the bookies cleaned with a rank outsider claiming the win.
All the way round it was Black Apalachi for Dessie Hughes who was travelling and jumping the best and he looked like a winner all the way round until he fell At Becher's on then second circuit to gasps from the crowd. The fall for Black apalachi meant that the race was blown wide open with the 2008 winner comply Or Die looking dangerous along with My Will.
As they came to the second last it was Comply Or Die and My Will who were leading but out of the pack came Mon Mome who was travelling like a dream. It was the 100/1 shot Mon Mome who stormed clear of the favourites to record on the most surprsing wins in the history of the race. Comply Or Die ran a blinder to come in second with the favourite My Will back in third for Ruby Walsh but neither of them could get near the brilliant winner who simply stormed clear at the elbow to win by a big margin.
